Japanese sneaker brand ASICS, which only focussed on running shoes till date, has launched their iconic Tiger Gel Lyte range in India.
With the sun radiating at its peak, what we needed the most were some summer-inspired sneakers. Exactly what ASICS Tiger did for the sneaker game. I have been going on for a bit now, about how 2016 has been an exciting year for hypebeasts. And Asics has only added to the juggernaut with the release of the Gel Lyte series in India. The sneaker I picked from their range is the Gel Lyte V, Sunburst. Internationally, this forms part of the “April Showers” pack. And although the brand will not release it as a collection in India, the entire line-up is up for grabs. I also had my eye on their navy blue polka dotted sneaker and the call to choose between the 2 was quite trying!
Take a look at the unboxing and on-feet video.
This is the first time I was trying on ASICS Tiger sneakers, although I have owned the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 Bruce Lee in the past. What I loved about the Gel Lyte, is the way they combined high quality suede leather with neoprene. You know, keeping it luxe but also sporty? The leather upper is primarily tan in color, the neoprene sock liner kind of cushioned inners are mint green (same as the toe and heel of the outsole) and the midsole is all white save for some speckles on the heel. The Asics branding is embossed on the heel in blue. The toe box is perforated, adding to the breathability of the sneaker.
I know a lot of people who aren’t too crazy about the runner silhouette. They prefer kicks with flat soles, like on an Suede, Air Force 1 or Superstars. To be entirely honest, neither was I, until about 18 months ago. Around that time, I realised how versatile, stylish and comfortable these designs can be. And ever since, the number of runner silhouettes in my collection have risen substantially.
I like this sneaker. When you look at it close, you can see that the quality of make is pretty high. There is no gum residue, no scuffs on the suede, just good work. It is light weight and comfortable. However, you might have to go up half a size because these shoes run a little small. I know that this is only the first of many Gel Lyte‘s in my collection. Must keep my eyes peeled for their range of interesting color ways!

Did you know that Nike, originals called Blue Ribbon Sports was founded by Phil Knight with the intention of selling Onitsuka Tiger sneakers in America? He was so impressed, during his trip to Japan, with the quality of the shoes being high despite the reasonable price point that he immediately signed up to be their American Sales partner.
