ASICS Tiger gets it’s Knit game on, with the GEL-Kayano. Say hello, to the Tiger Knit

ASICS Tiger have officially entered the Knit sneaker category with the GEL-Kayano. Unofficially called the Tiger Knit (or is that officially) the sneaker comes in a low and mid variant, introduced during the launch of the Myntra Sneaker Club in India. Initially dropped in monochrome colors with Black and White options, they are headed in the right direction with their next line-up set to release in pastel colorways keeping with the onset of Spring/Summer.

We take a closer look first, as always, with a video from my YouTube Channel.

The GEL Lyte was featured in this article when it launched.

The ASICS Tiger GEL-Kayano is a silhouette known for it’s comfort and when something is a classic (been in the market since the 1990s), it surely deserves an overhaul. The latest drop of the GEL-Kayano trainer comes with a one piece sock-like knit upper and a triple-white colorway. The sneaker retains the overall design theme of the classic GEL-Kayano along with the mid-sole. The sneaker has little to distract from it’s design with that clean white colorway, including the skinny flat laces that run through the knit upper and the mid-foot cage that uses the Tiger stripes for structure.

The future of sneaker culture is technology and innovation. ASICS has begun it’s movement in that direction with the introduction of Knit uppers. This also caters to the highly demanding sneaker community who are no longer content with re-issues and want new materials infused into their favourite silhouettes.

What I loved the most was the interpretation of the Tiger stripes of the ASICS to form the mid-foot cage on these kicks. The protective cage also serves as a lock-down for your feet. They come in 2 ankle heights, the low and the mid. The low has an elasticated band at the opening whereas the mid has a pull tab to allow you to slip your feet in, with ease. There are minor aesthetic differences too between the low and the mid. Like the perforated toe box on the low and the leaf/teardrop detailing throughout the knit of the mid.

The heel has been re-inforced to ensure your feet have the required support. Go True To Size with these kicks. I would actually recommend going down half a size, if that option is available. But wearing a pair of sports socks, actually sorts the issue out for you.

  1. They look amazing. However, can these be used for aerobics/zumba and do they have arch support (Kayano models are usually associated with arch support)?
