The new Levi’s 501 CT (Customized Tapered) Jeans : Old wine, new bottle, improved taste

The new Levi’s 501 CT Jeans, gives you a modern take on a classic silhouette.

The Levi’s 501 is the one pair that we all know and has been around for over 140 years. The 501 is iconic in its own rights. It was in fact, featured in the TIME magazine as “the” outfit of the 20th century. Also known as the Original Fit, it sits at the waist and has a regular straight-leg.

Over the years, several 501 loyalists (mostly youngsters) got their 501s tapered to give it a more current appeal. This is what got Levi’s thinking and they did the job for their customers with the CT. They got the denims tapered from the knee to 13.75″ at the leg opening.

It is also slim through the thighs.

There’s three ways to wear it – the up-sized version is relaxed and modern, the true size is the classic straight cut staple and the downsized version is slim-fit and elegant. Let me put this in perspective for you.

I am a size 32. If I picked up a size 32 of the 501 CT, it would wear like the classic and be a straight cut more or less. If I up-sized to a 34, it would look something like an anti-fit being very relaxed.

Downsized is a bit more fitted and suited for people who are V-shaped – a little broader on top and narrow at the bottom – which is what I opted for by picking a size 30. (I need to build me some calf muscles soon)

This goes into my arsenal of iconic wardrobe pieces, that have a bit of history to them. The next step is to get them custom distressed.

I picked the white pair because I never owned one in this color. Apart from the fact that it is going to be a challenge to keep clean and maintained white, I think I can get used to this pair.

  1. […] Mixing is best. Going head to toe in the same wash is tricky. But it isn’t just about the wash, the weight also matters. Wearing a light weight chambray shirt on denims of the same/similar shade look good due to the varying weight of fabric. You can check out my post on the light on heavy denim look that I did earlier. And my attempt at teaming different shades of denim. […]
