When I was in Dubai for 10 days in December, I had the opportunity of getting my hands on the adidas Originals Yeezy Powerphase Calabasas. I skipped the first drop of the cream whites, because the minimal skinny sneaker silhouette does not work on me. But when I saw Samir Rana of Style Spy sporting the grey colorway on Day 3 of SoleDXB, I fell in love with them. The leather looked so supple. Also the fact that it was retailing at half the price of the Indian MRP helped me swing in favour of the sneaker.
Sneaker unboxing video from my YouTube Channel:
Fortunately for me, the hype on the sneaker (or knowledge of the drop) was limited and when I walked into the adidas Originals store at The Dubai Mall the following day, I copped my size at retail. And this was a good thing to happen, because the sneaker being narrow and slim I had to go up half a size. While I normally buy sneakers in the UK 8 size, for the Yeezy Powerphase I sized up and picked up an 8.5 which fit perfect. You must also note that I have broad feet.
Like I was saying, this isn’t a sneaker I would buy otherwise (I have also said that in my video) but seeing them on-feet made me fall in love. And I figured, since I was getting a good deal on them I might as well check if the hype on them was real.
The sneaker is rather straightforward, a nice and minimal pair. Perfect to team with a shirt and tapered jeans/chinos. You honestly can rock these with a suit as well and they would fit right in.
Would I double up or buy a second pair? Probably not, since I prefer chunky kicks and am in shorts most of the time. But I have zero regrets about this pair, it in fact is a good buy and will probably see a fair bit of wear time. Samir has the first drop of the adidas Yeezy Powerphase Calabasas as well and they look sweet! He doubled up on the grey and will most certainly pick up the upcoming triple blacks.
And a lot of people (I am guilty of it as well) compared the Powerphase to the Reebok Club C. But then, I learned eventually that the Powerphase is actually an adidas sneaker from back in the day. The price point at which the sneaker is sold, is at quite a sweet spot. It is priced higher in comparison to the Club C no doubt but the quality of materials used is a lot better. Although, I must point out there were a lot of glue stains on the sneaker. Is it worth the hype? Absolutely. It is no runner and has no boost but is a very clean sneaker to own in your rotation. Especially on days when you want to your fit to be “grown up”!
The all black adidas Originals Yeezy Powerphase Calabasas is scheduled to hit us in the first 2 months of 2018. Will you be copping a pair? Let us know through the comments.
