Mixing Streetwear with Levi’s 501 Jeans – How does it hold up?

I styled streetwear and sneakers with what should be every man’s (and woman’s) wardrobe staple – the classic Levi’s 501 Jeans. This is how it held up.

Let me know in the comments what you make of the styles. I’d be interested to know your opinion.

May 20th 2017, marks the 144th birthday of the blue jeans. Introduced back in 1873, the Levi’s 501 jeans have stood the test of time. It has become synonymous with the term “make it your own” with people ripping, stitching on patches and altering the fit to their preferences. For the longest duration, the silhouette remained untouched till they introduced a mildly tapered version called the 501 CT back in 2014. And then this year, in 2017, they gave the 501 what people thought would never be possible – a skinny fit.

In the past, I covered a downsized fit of the Levi’s 501 CT, took my entire Levi’s wardrobe on a road trip and also took my Levi’s 501 CT down memory lane.

Levi’s India kicked off the launch with a campaign of the 501 Skinny worn differently across the country. From Bangalore to Bombay, Delhi to Calcutta. When I shot for the Bangalore edition, I teamed the 501 Skinny with a HUF tee and an adidas Originals X Bedwin and The Heartbreakers NMD.

Because streetwear is an integral part of my style, I decided to do an entire piece on how the Levi’s 501 blended in with the subculture. The results are here for you to see.

Look 1 : Oversized Tee, Skinny Denims, White Socks and White Sneakers

For this look I threw on an oversized tee with the Levi’s 501 Skinny Jeans and some summer friendly kicks.

Look 2 : Printed Tee, Skinny Denims, Mid-Top Sneakers

This was something I was frankly experimenting with. A fitted tee (note, I am not fit) with the Levi’s 501 Skinny Jeans and a pair of skate shoes which I was wearing for the first time.

I personally feel, I should have worn either a size down on the jeans or a different pair of kicks. Or just should have cuffed it differently.

Look 3 : An all Black and Red ensemble

The third look, is my regular go-to. A basic black tee with black 501 CT denims and my favourite pair of iconic basketball kicks.

My verdict: In a world of jogger wearing non-athletes, I think the Levi’s 501 holds up pretty strong. Although I personally feel they team best with basketball silhouettes like the Jordan 1 Retro. For runner silhouettes you’d perhaps prefer the 519 which is extra skinny. Of course, you’d need drumsticks for legs, unlike the friggin thunder thighs I am endowed with!

  1. […] Another hot piece, that is part of this look is the Supreme X Undercover X Public Enemy 2018 collab tee. This is quite a “controversial” collab coming in 2018, considering the time we are in right now. I mean sure, this may not apply to India because despite being the most racist country the problem is more so evident in the Americas. Public Enemy’s 1990 Album “Fear of a Black Planet” is the inspiration for the artwork on this collection. Their album cover and famous crosshairs logo (a black man in the sights of a sniper viewfinder) adorn most of the collection. More so, the title of their album. I don’t know if this deterred resellers and general white hypebeasts because I was easily able to cop 3 tees from the drop. I do have an issue with their sizing this season though. Everything is super oversized. I have found Supreme’s tees getting bigger with every change in season. The Supreme Sade Photo tee, for instance, fits me super snug at a size L, whereas the Supreme Nasty Nas tee from the subsequent season is slightly oversized (nearly perfect) and this season it is super loose and a lot in fit like my XL sized CDG X Supreme Box Logo Tees.
